In 1851 a French immigrant named Lebardens built what is now the Old Cuevas Bistro as a trading post and operated two freight schooners down Bayou Portage to the Bay of St Louis. In 1857 the original building burned and was re-built the same year. The framing, ceiling and front of the dining area is basically the same as the original 1857 building. When Mr Lebardens died he left the business to his daughter who had marries a Mr. Cuevas. In 1898 a post office was established in the building with the address to be Pineville, MS. However, the state already had a Pineville post office elsewhere, so they named it Cuevas, MS. After the store owners. The same family operated the store as a grocery, filling station, laundromat, sandwich bar, etc. continuously until about 1968. Mr Lebardens built his home next doorin 1860 where the current owner Casandra Timmons lives with her family today. Cassandra bought the property in 2004 and began construction of the Bistro that year. After Katrina she rebuilt the home and restaurant and resumed serving what we consider the best food and service available anywhere on the Gulf Coast.
